Mass Transit Overload
Millions of people use the New York City Subway every year. Due to this, it is one of the busiest mass transit units in the world. Specifically, the South Ferry Terminal, located in Lower Manhattan, is the gateway for tourists visiting Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) estimates that over six million people use this terminal every year. With this many visitors and being over a hundred years old, the terminal was in need of a major overhaul.
Project Details
This 530 million dollar project was to include a rebuild of the subway station to correct deficiencies. They had to construct additional tracks and provide additional station entrances with ADA accessibility. These additional entrances and the prior station entrances take the brunt of the harsh New York winters, the corrosive environment from being on the water, and the wear and tear of six million people every year. Hence, the engineers and contractors needed a material to withstand these elements.
So the material of choice was 2205 duplex stainless steel. This material was chosen because of its higher mechanical properties like yield strength, and higher corrosion resistance than 316/L stainless steel. Stainless Structurals provided custom 2205 stainless steel channels, beams, and a cross section to a major stainless steel distributor who supplied the contractor. Overall, we shipped a total of 30,000 pounds of 2205 duplex stainless steel material for this project.
The Benefits of Duplex Stainless Steel
By choosing stainless steel, the structure looks amazing. By using duplex stainless steel, the structures will hold up and last a lifetime, even under these elements.
Increasing Popularity of Stainless Steel in Construction
The South Ferry Terminal is just one example of engineers and architects using stainless steel for their design needs. When a structure is visible to millions of people like this one, you want it to look nice and not show rust or blemishes. Therefore, stainless steel is the smart choice.
