For years, there has only been a handful of design resources available to architects, engineers and constructors to use for their projects involving stainless steel. Over the past two years, Stainless Strucuturals has been a part of the committee that has now developed a full design standard for structural stainless steel.
An Official Standard
The ability to use stainless steel in structural applications just became much easier. Now official, ANSI/AISC 370-21 Specification for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings and ANSI/AISC 313-21 Code of Standard Practice for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings are now available to download directly from the American Institute of Steel Construction’s website, aisc.org.
The significance of these standards cannot be understated, as they are the first U.S. specifications for the use of structural stainless steel. These standards are a major benefit to both structural engineers and architects to use for design specifications not just in the United States, but globally. Designers, fabricators, and erectors now have official standards for specifications and referrals.
Benefits to the Stainless Steel Industry
While industrial applications involving building and construction will see the majority of stainless steel use, these standards will apply to many other areas such as nuclear power, marine projects, bridges and more.
Stainless Structurals can provide the AEC community with abundant support to combine with these standards to help in your design. This includes product brochures, section properties for sharp cornered structural shapes, Revit files, and more. All of this can be found at our resources page and you can always read about specific projects on our blog.
From Conception to Reality
From being on the initial committee for the original design guide, to seeing the official standard become a reality, Stainless Structurals is proud of our work and even more excited to provide more products to the industry.
