LaserCon™ Laser Fusion is an extremely efficient method of joining steel, especially austenitic stainless steel. The inherent characteristics of stainless steel, such as low heat transfer rate, uniform structure etc., all contribute towards an extremely reliable process in comparison to other metals. Nevertheless, laser fusion is influenced greatly by the high dynamics of the melt pool, which can lead to local defects or go as far as to cause macroscopic faults.
Industrial experience has proven that the monitoring of process parameter alone is not sufficient to guarantee absolute product quality. For this reason, after the fusion process has been completed, additional quality inspections are mandatory. The best known inspection methods, which are commonly used in the production of welded pipes, are those of ultrasound and eddy current testing. Our fused sections guarantee the same high quality standard that customers throughout the world have learned to value from laser welded pipes.
The specifically developed fusion inspection system by Montanstahl meets all the official standards and has been evaluated and accepted by both the German TÜV (German Technical Inspectorate) and the SLV (welding institute) of Munich . The inspection system is a true 100% inspection: each individual bar is checked from start to finish, ensuring full penetration and weld continuity over the whole length of the bar.
The advantages to the customer are many. The 100% control complies first and foremost with legal requirements deriving from product liability. Furthermore, the perfect fusion means that engineers do not need to apply any weld correction factor, which in turn means that our lasered sections are evenly matched with hot-rolled sections as far as structural engineering is concerned. This prevents constructions from becoming unnecessarily heavy and keeps costs down as a result. It also means that construction engineers can continue to use standard sections.
